Yoga
The yoga alarm that makes you stretch before it stops
A yoga alarm keeps ringing until you get out of bed and into a pose. In WakeOps the Yoga mission watches through the front camera and counts the pose once you have held it steadily for about a second, and every one of its eight poses is standing or on the floor, so none of them can be done in bed.
How it works
- 1
Pick one pose for the alarm: Tree pose, Warrior II, Triangle, Chair pose, Forward fold, Downward dog, Cat-Cow or Cobra.
- 2
When the mission starts, a setup card says where to put the phone and which way to face. Standing poses want it propped at about waist height; floor poses want it standing up on the floor. Step back until your whole body is in the frame.
- 3
Get into the pose. A live stick figure follows your body: white when it can see you, coral when you are in position, with the limbs that need fixing picked out in amber and a one-line correction such as “Lift one foot onto your other leg.”
- 4
Hold it steadily for about a second. A wobble of a fraction of a second is forgiven; a lucky frame on the way into position is not. Then a checkmark lands and the alarm stops.
What you can set
- The pose: Tree pose, Warrior II, Triangle, Chair pose, Forward fold, Downward dog, Cat-Cow or Cobra. A pose has no length to choose; it is done once it is recognized.
- A chain: put Yoga before or after other missions, up to five on one alarm (Yoga, then Steps, for example).
- Ring during missions: on by default, so the alarm keeps sounding until the pose counts. Switch it off for that alarm if you want a quiet pose.
- Mission Clips (optional, off unless you turn it on): the front camera films the mission for a short clip that stays on your iPhone.
- Try it now: practice the pose with the real screen, free, before you trust it with an alarm.
Where to put the phone for each pose
The camera reads some poses from the front and some from the side, and getting that the wrong way round is the most common reason a pose never counts.
| Pose | Where the phone goes | Which way you face |
|---|---|---|
| Tree pose | Propped at about waist height, screen towards you | Face the phone |
| Warrior II | Propped at about waist height, screen towards you | Face the phone |
| Triangle | Propped at about waist height, screen towards you | Face the phone |
| Chair pose | Propped at about waist height | Side-on to the phone |
| Forward fold | Propped at about waist height | Side-on to the phone |
| Downward dog | Standing up on the floor | Side-on to the phone |
| Cat-Cow | Standing up on the floor | Side-on to the phone |
| Cobra | Standing up on the floor | Side-on to the phone |
When a pose won't count
- The phone is lying flat. It judges your position against gravity, so it has to stand up. A phone on its back cannot tell which way is down.
- Part of you is out of frame. Step back until your head and feet are both in view. The screen tells you when it cannot see you.
- It's dark. Turn a light on; the camera needs to see your outline.
- The form is off. Follow the amber correction under the camera. Chair pose wants you to “Bend your knees, as if sitting back.” Downward dog wants you to “Lift your hips up and back.”
The poses are judged by rules about joint angles, not by a teacher, and the rules are new. Run each pose once with Try it now, in the room and the light you will use, before it guards a real morning.

Common questions
Why isn't child's pose an option?
Anything you can hold lying in bed would end the alarm without getting you up. Every pose in the mission needs you standing or on the floor, on purpose.
Do I need a yoga mat?
No. The camera judges the shape of your body, not what you are standing on. A mat or a rug just makes the floor poses kinder first thing in the morning.
Is the camera recording me?
No. Frames are analyzed on your iPhone and discarded, unless you have turned on Mission Clips, which keeps a short clip on your phone for you to share or delete.
Is Yoga the same as the Exercise mission?
They share the camera, but Exercise counts squats, push-ups or a plank, while Yoga waits for a held pose. If you want reps instead, see the squat alarm.
