Will an iPhone alarm ring in Silent mode or Do Not Disturb?
By WakeOps ·
Yes: an alarm created in Apple's Clock app sounds even when Silent mode, Do Not Disturb or another Focus is enabled. But a third-party alarm app may use notifications instead of system alarms. On an older iPhone, a notification-based alarm can be visible without producing sound when the Ring/Silent switch is on. Check the type of alarm and your iOS version before relying on it.
Clock alarms are not ordinary notifications
Apple explicitly states that the Clock app's alarm sound is not blocked by Silent mode or Do Not Disturb. By contrast, Focus settings can silence app notifications, and Silent mode generally silences alert audio.
| Alarm system | Silent mode | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Clock | Sounds | Sounds |
| WakeOps with AlarmKit on iOS 26 or later | Sounds | Sounds |
| WakeOps with Time Sensitive notifications on older supported iOS | Does not make alert sound | Can break through an allowed Focus |
These facts describe Apple Clock and the current WakeOps implementation, not every alarm app in the App Store. Check the behavior of the particular product you use.
Five checks if you see an alarm but hear nothing
- Open Clock and make sure the alarm's Sound is not set to None.
- Open Settings and Sounds & Haptics. Check the alert or alarm volume control available in your installed iOS version.
- If you use another alarm app, check whether it uses system alarms or Time Sensitive notifications.
- Check the Ring/Silent switch or Action button if the app uses notifications, and review the app's notification permissions and Focus allowances.
- Set a short test alarm while your phone is locked and configured exactly as it will be during sleep.

What changes for WakeOps with iOS version
WakeOps uses Apple's AlarmKit system alarms on iOS 26 and later. An iOS Stop button may still appear, but pressing it does not mark the WakeOps mission finished. The alarm returns within the configured enforcement window.
On iOS 17.6 through versions before iOS 26, WakeOps uses a series of Time Sensitive notifications. Those notifications can get through Focus, but Silent mode prevents them making sound. A notification alarm is not identical to a Clock system alarm.
WakeOps cannot change system volume, does not have an Android app, and needs Premium to schedule alarms. Every mission can be rehearsed for free. See the no-snooze alarm guide for the full limitation of the enforcement window.
Choose an alarm that works in your environment
If the alarm rings but you dismiss it without getting up, a louder tone may not solve the real problem. A Math mission requires correct answers. Steps uses the phone's motion hardware, and Item search asks you to find everyday objects with the camera.
Test your alarms before a critical shift, exam or flight, and keep a reliable separate backup. A mission-based task can make dismissal more deliberate, but cannot compensate for lack of sleep or a failed phone.
Common questions
Does Do Not Disturb silence the iPhone Clock alarm?
No. Apple's Clock app alarms still sound through Do Not Disturb and other Focus modes.
Why is my alarm visible but silent?
The Clock alarm may have Sound set to None or a low volume. Third-party notification alarms may also be muted by Silent mode or their notification configuration.
Does WakeOps ring when the iPhone is silent?
WakeOps uses AlarmKit on iOS 26 and later, which sounds through Silent and Focus. Older supported iOS versions use notifications that do not make a sound in Silent mode.
Can WakeOps increase my iPhone alarm volume?
No. iOS does not let WakeOps change the device's alarm volume setting.
