Word scramble
The alarm that makes you unscramble a word
A word scramble alarm keeps ringing until you have put a jumbled word back in order. In the WakeOps Word scramble mission the letters sit on tiles and you tap them in the right order; one wrong letter puts every tile back. It asks for reading and a moment of thought, needs only the screen, and works in the dark.
How it works
- 1
Choose Word scramble as the mission and a level: Easy is one word, Medium two, Hard three.
- 2
When the alarm rings, tap Start mission. The letters of an everyday word (coffee, window, shower and the like) appear shuffled on tiles, with “Tap the letters in order.”
- 3
Tap them in order. A wrong letter clears the word (“Not that one. Start the word again.”), so tapping at random gets you nowhere. There is no time limit.
- 4
Finish the last word and the alarm stops. Swiping it away or pressing the system Stop button doesn't count; the alarm comes back until the words are done.
What you can set
- Level: Easy (1 word), Medium (2) or Hard (3). A mission never asks for the same word twice.
- Words follow the app's language: English, German, French, Japanese or Spanish
- Ring during missions (per alarm, on by default): switch it off to solve in quiet
- Still-awake check (per alarm: off, 5, 10 or 15 minutes)
Why a scramble is harder than a button
Recognizing a word you can see is automatic. Building one from shuffled letters isn't: you have to hold the letters in mind and try an order. Because a wrong letter clears the whole word, you can't tap your way through without reading, and a dismiss button asks for none of that.
Word scramble, Type it out or Math?
Type it out asks you to type a whole line exactly, with autocorrect off, so it takes longer. Math swaps letters for numbers. All three need no permissions and work in the dark, and none of them gets you out of bed on its own: add a Still-awake check, or read how to get out of bed for what does.
Free to download for iPhone (iOS 17.6 or later). Setting alarms needs WakeOps Premium, an in-app subscription. Every mission can be tried for free.
Common questions
Is there a time limit?
No. A wrong letter puts the tiles back and you start that word again, but nothing times out and the alarm doesn't end.
Can I do it in a shared bedroom?
The puzzle is silent and screen only. To keep the alarm itself quiet while you solve, switch off Ring during missions for that alarm; it comes back if you leave the word half done.
Can I choose my own words?
Not in Word scramble: the words come from a built-in list of everyday ones. Type it out lets you write your own line to type.
What if I'd rather not read anything at 6am?
Try Odd shape or Quick reaction. Both stop the alarm without a single word.
