The alarm that makes you take a photo before it stops
A photo alarm clock keeps ringing until you take a picture of something you can only reach by getting up. In WakeOps that is the Photo mission: you choose a target when you set the alarm, and in the morning the camera has to recognize it before the alarm stops. A bed can be photographed without leaving it; a bathroom sink can't, which is why the bathroom is the default.
How it works
- 1
Pick a target when you set the alarm. There are 18 built in, in five groups: Rooms (Bathroom, Kitchen, Bed), Around the house (Coffee, Glass of water, Bread, Door, Wardrobe, Chair, TV, Clock), People and pets (Dog, Cat, Person), Outside (Sky, Grass, Car) and Just for fun (Ball). Or photograph a place of your own.
- 2
When the alarm rings, tap Start mission. The camera opens with one instruction, such as “Go to the bathroom and point the camera at the sink.” With Ring during missions on (the default), the alarm keeps sounding while you walk there.
- 3
Aim at the target. Until it is recognized, the screen tells you what the camera sees instead; once a match starts to build it says “Hold steady”. It needs several steady frames in a row, so one lucky frame never stops an alarm.
- 4
When it is sure, “Bathroom found” (or your target's name) lands with a green seal, the alarm stops and the morning is recorded. Swiping the alarm away, locking the phone or pressing the system Stop button doesn't count: the alarm comes back until the photo is done or the wake-up window closes.
What you can set
- Target: one of the 18 built-in targets (Bathroom by default), or a place of your own
- Always the same or Any of these: tick several targets and a spin picks one when the alarm rings. The pick stays the same if you leave the mission and come back, so you can't spin again for an easier one.
- Choose your own target…: photograph a spot once and name it. It joins Your places, and in the morning the alarm waits for the same view.
- Offer Math when stuck (per alarm, off by default): after 15 seconds on the mission, a card offers to switch to Math
- Mission Clips (off unless you turn it on): films the mission from the moment the camera opens to the win, for a short clip you can keep or share
Which photo target should you choose?
The best target is somewhere you have to walk to, that is lit when you wake up, and that is there every morning. For most people that is the bathroom or the kitchen.
| Group | Gets you to | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Rooms | The bathroom or kitchen sink | Bed can be photographed without leaving it |
| Around the house | The first job of the day: a coffee, a glass of water | Coffee means the cup; there is no coffee-machine target |
| People and pets | A dog that is already waiting to go out | They have to be awake and in the frame |
| Outside | The front door: sky, grass or your car | The sky is dark at 6am for half the year |
| Just for fun | Wherever the ball lives | Easy to leave next to the bed |

Photo, Item search or Color search?
Photo asks for the same thing every morning, so you know the walk before you take it. Item search draws everyday things at random from the ones you put in play, so you can't stage them the night before. Color search draws a color and accepts anything that color. Free to download for iPhone (iOS 17.6 or later). Setting alarms needs WakeOps Premium, an in-app subscription. Every mission can be tried for free.
Common questions
Can it tell whether my bed is made?
No. The target is called Made bed in the app, and making it is a good first job, but the camera can only confirm it sees a bed, not how straight the covers are. If getting up is the problem, choose the bathroom or the kitchen.
What happens to the photos?
Camera frames are analyzed on your iPhone while the mission runs and then discarded, unless you have turned on Mission Clips. A photo you save as your own target stays in the app's private storage on the phone, is left out of iCloud backups, and is erased by Delete all data.
Does it need an internet connection?
No. Recognition runs on the iPhone with Apple's Vision framework, so the mission works in airplane mode.
What if it doesn't recognize my target?
Turn a light on, get the whole thing in the frame and hold the phone still. Use Try it now in the same room and light you'll have at alarm time, and pick another target if one keeps failing. If the camera is refused or stops working, the mission offers Math.
Does a photo alarm work in the dark?
Only if the target is lit. The sky and grass are no use at 6am in winter, which is why the default is a room with a light switch. For a room you'd rather keep dark, Steps needs no light at all.
