Maze

The alarm that makes you solve a maze

A maze alarm clock won't stop until you have dragged a dot from the start of a small maze to the exit. WakeOps draws a new maze each morning, with exactly one route through it, and you follow it with your finger. It needs a steady hand and a proper look at the screen, which is hard to manage lying face-down on a pillow.

How it works

  1. 1

Choose Maze as the mission and a level: Easy is a 5 by 5 grid, Medium 7 by 7, Hard 9 by 9.

  2. 2

When the alarm rings, tap Start mission. The maze appears with the dot in one corner and “Drag the dot to the exit.”

  3. 3

Drag it along the passages. Walls stop the dot but never send it back to the start, and backing up over your own line rubs it out, so the trail always shows the route you are on.

  4. 4

Reach the exit and the alarm stops. Swiping the alarm away or pressing Stop doesn't count; it comes back until the dot is out.

What you can set

  • Level: Easy (5 by 5), Medium (7 by 7) or Hard (9 by 9)
  • VoiceOver: four direction actions move the dot one cell at a time, so the maze can be finished without seeing the screen
  • Ring during missions (per alarm, on by default)

Who a maze alarm suits

A maze is for people who dislike words and sums but want more than a tap. It asks for both eyes and fine control rather than knowledge, and every maze has exactly one route, so it is always solvable. Like every screen mission it can be done in bed; if lying back down is your problem, chain it with a mission that moves you, such as Steps.

Easy, Medium or Hard?

Easy's 5 by 5 maze is short enough to read at a glance. Medium's 7 by 7 is long enough that you have to follow it, and Hard's 9 by 9 needs both eyes on the screen. The maze always fills the same space, so the passages get narrower as the grid grows, and Hard asks for a steadier finger too. Try each one with Try it now before you choose.

Free to download for iPhone (iOS 17.6 or later). Setting alarms needs WakeOps Premium, an in-app subscription. Every mission can be tried for free.

Common questions

What happens if I hit a wall?

Nothing bad. The dot stops at the wall and stays where it is; as the screen puts it, “Walls stop you. They never send you back to the start.”

Does it get easier once I know the maze?

There is nothing to learn: the maze is generated fresh each time, so tomorrow's route is different.

Can I solve it lying down?

Yes, if you're careful, which is the honest limit of any screen puzzle. It takes more than a swipe, but it won't get you out of bed by itself; how to get out of bed covers what does.
