Type it out

The alarm that makes you type a sentence to turn it off

A typing alarm keeps ringing until you have typed a sentence exactly, letter by letter. In WakeOps that mission is Type it out: a short, medium or long line (or one you wrote yourself) appears on screen, and the alarm stops the moment what you typed matches it.

How it works

  1. 1

When the mission starts, the line appears in a card and the keyboard opens straight away.

  2. 2

Type it. Each word lights up as you get it right, and a counter shows how many words are done.

  3. 3

Capitals, accents, punctuation and extra spaces don't count. Every letter and every digit does, in order. A slip turns the field amber with “Something's off. Check the last word.”

  4. 4

There is no submit button: the alarm stops the moment the line matches.

  5. 5

Autocorrect is off, so the keyboard will not quietly fix your spelling, and the line on screen cannot be selected, so it cannot be copied into the field.

What you can set

  • Length: Short, Medium (the default) or Long, with ten lines each.
  • Your own line: up to 120 characters, used instead of the built-in lines. It is stored with the alarm and never leaves your iPhone.
  • Language: the built-in lines are translated into all five of the app's languages (English, German, French, Japanese and Spanish). Japanese lines are written in kana, so they type without choosing kanji.
  • Ring during missions: on by default, so the alarm keeps sounding while you type. Switch it off for that alarm to type in quiet.
  • Try it now: a free practice run with the real screen.

What the lines look like

  • Short: “I am awake now.” or “My feet are on the floor.”
  • Medium: “Five more minutes never meant five more minutes.”
  • Long: “If I can spell every word of this line, I am awake enough to stand up.”

A line is drawn for each morning and stays the same however many times you open the mission, so closing it and coming back does not buy a shorter one.

Type it out or another quiet mission?

Every one of these works in the dark and asks for no permission. Math asks for numbers, Word scramble for rearranging letters, and Memory for repeating a sequence. Type it out has nothing to work out, only something to do accurately, which suits mornings when arithmetic feels cruel.

What it can't do

It can be done lying down. Type it out wakes your head, not your legs, so if you tend to win and then fall back asleep, add a still-awake check (a second alarm 5, 10 or 15 minutes later, stopped by one round of easy sums) or chain it with Steps.

Free to download for iPhone (iOS 17.6 or later). Setting alarms needs WakeOps Premium, an in-app subscription. Every mission can be tried for free.

Common questions

Can I use it in a shared bedroom?

Yes. It makes no sound of its own and needs no light. The alarm still rings when it goes off; with Ring during missions switched off for that alarm, it goes quiet while you type.

Is a long line too much when I'm half asleep?

Short lines are four to six words. Start there, and move up once Short stops waking you.

Does it work with any keyboard language?

Yes. The judge ignores case and accents, so a line types the same on any keyboard that has its letters, and in Japanese hiragana and katakana count as the same.
